Used to do it every few days or so and it'd usually do it several times in one gaming session. Wii would freeze, make a constant high pitched buzzing nose and not respond to anything. Only way I could restore it was to disconnect power. Not done it for quite a few weeks now, and up until then it seemed to be doing it less and less. I don't ever remember it doing it in the daytime, only at night (9pm onwards, GMT) and it never spazzed out on Campain Mode. Read somewhere it was likely to do with Wii processor chip not being able to cope with very high demand situations and most often it would freeze on me when there were several players on screen with lots of explosions, so maybe they were right.
In case anyone's curious, got my Wii Feb 2010, it's generally on it's side though I've had it upright and that didn't seem to make any difference to the regulatory of crashing, it doesn't do it on any other game, got Black Ops and did the old Wii update thing beginning of this year but it would never connect to internet for some reason..... I much prefer goldeneye anyway!
